So, I have an experiment I would like to try out, a game to play, and you should play, too. Complete a philosophic (social, moral, political, etc.) thought in only 6 sentences. It stems from this blog, which is an excercise in elegance for writers that I found through this article, on doing a similar thing in 5 words (Maybe later). Elegance is a very useful concept (Good link on elegance here, I'm ecclectic) and key to effective communication. My hope is that it will make my musings, which tend to ramble, more concise, and encourage more participation here at LtL (After all, it's only 6 sentences, it's not that hard). This could stem into debates, evolving dialectic style things or go in any number of other directions you may suggest.
Paix et amour,
Joe!
PS: 5 words is very tricky.
I’ve spoken with many
I’ve spoken with many people about the nature of materialism and capitalism. It seems that neither side, not those who believe that money is a goal, nor those who say it is a purely evil force, is correct. Money is just a tool, one that provides security, one which can improve a life, but not an end in itself. There is a Buddhist teaching that says that when you build a raft to cross a river, you leave the raft on the bank and move on once you’ve crossed. Just as carrying the raft with you is folly, assuming money is the universal solution is folly, bearing the tool past its usefulness leads only to burdens. So, money is good, it is useful, but it can also enslave and corrupt, when you forget that its purpose is to help you live, not to be your life.
Paix et amour,
Joe!
