A new article in the New York times by Jared Diamond. An interesting article that reminds us of the real conflict behind the political screens- the consumption of resources of the first world compared to that of the third- the last part of the article is perhaps most relevent

Another positive feedback loop seems to be appearing...

As the earth warms, the oceans (the largest sink of carbon) are decreasing in their ability to store carbon

this is a biiiiiig red flag

"New" Carbon Negative Biofuel

There has been an emerging controversy over the use of biofuels...namely that the growth and production of these crops (corn, etc) will result in a net postive input of C02 due to the heavy reliance on fuel-burning equipment

However, a new article in Science may have an alternative with the use of "humble grasses" aka. prarie grasses...very interesting short article

Whales will be killed by Navy

So the appeals court reversed the decision to ban sonar testing in Southern California citing "We are currently engaged in war, in two countries," said Judge Andrew Kleinfeld in the majority opinion, joined by Judge Consuelo Callahan. "There are no guarantees extending from 2007 to 2009 or at any other time against other countries deciding to engage us, or our determining that it is necessary to engage other countries."

So the Navy can go ahead and kill whales while we are supposed to sit around and wait for another war on another country?  Awsome...

 Thoughts?

The Looming Food Crisis

This is a really interesting article....

http://www.truthout.org/issues_06/082907EA.shtml

However, the article fails to really expand on the inherent ecological instability of industrial monoculture systems as well as the fact that huge agro-conglomerates and pro-GMO industries are benefiting immensely from the use of biofuels...not to mention the land that will be lost to this industry in developing nations...I guess you can't cover it all though

Thoughts?
