a formula for Facebook organizing, ideas for Lose the Label

How do you make a social justice oriented group successful? It's hard to do something big on Facebook unless you have something gimmicky like the If ___ people join, I'll Streak at the Yanks/BoSox game or the Brody Ruckus thing. But how do you make a big group that appeals to the intelligent, compassionate side of people?

Well, first invite your friends, duh. That won't get you far, though, especially if your idea is lame bullshit. It takes more.

First, a good one has to ASK something of its members. Not too much, but enough so there's a point to the group. 400,000 Faces and If ___ ppl join, I'll donate __ to Darfur were perfect examples. The group's objective depended on them being big, but they had an objective, which is why they could grow. Joining those groups was an act of activism, albeit small.

Another reason they succeeded was they were fresh, original ideas.

I have two right now: groups to facilitate boycotts, groups to showcase a phone in day... call-congress (or other Tools) on a certain issue.

How Lose the Label can help:

If you launch a group, we can support you by using the Lose the Label FB group. When we send out groupwide messages, we can highlight your new group. And once we get past 1000 members and Facebook automatically disables our Message All Members feature, we can Create Related Events to launch new groups... creating publicity to TONS of people, many of whom are likely to agree with the cause and join the group.

Then you message them asking them to invite their friends.

In return, you plug Lose the Label somewhere in your group description, like Tricia did with (RED) and also spam your wall every once in awhile telling members to join LtL (if you're the creator of a group, it's not spamming, but rather just really effective advertising).

We can repeat this formula endlessly.

We can make thunderclaps of activism.

If _____ people join this group I'll streak Iraq to end the war. (Or at least stun everybody long enough to stop the shooting for a bit)

I want to start a black armband push at somepoint.  A little busy right now, I'll have more info tomorrow or wednesday after I meet with some people ip here.

just be careful not to get your balls shot off.

also, I can help you with some antiwar contacts who might be interested in the armbands idea.

Ha, yeah, I bet people would join that group though.

Yeah, I'm gonna talk with our anti-war group tomorrow then contact bring it up with the Vemont student anti-war network.  After that I'll post something here, but once I do that definitely help out with whatever contacts you have.

the FB group idea is pretty good. some folks here did something kinda like that last year ("Streak Against the Streak of Lies") but w/o any open organizing. it was all hush-hush. but if a lot of people committed via the Net, ... I dunno, there's potential. I bet a lot of folks would join a group like that.

you'd have to be nuts not to.
